Amazing snorkeling in Pulau Weh, but no pictures. ( Our underwater camera case didn't work.)
HIGHLIGHT-- we didn't(!) see the five foot ("harmless") black tip sharks that other folks did.
Our second day was very rainy and windy. Our innkeeper offered to take us with her while she grocery shopped in the town of Sabang. We walked around while she shopped in town.
The Acehenese version of a department store had lots of ornate dishes and glassware and even a Christmas tree (in this 100% Muslim community). We then wandered down to the water. Look for the boat stuck on the pier from the 2004 tsunami. We loved the colorful style of the local boats.
While doing errands with Liza, we learned what a difficult job she has running a remote inn. We carried laundry first by boat to the town, and then by car to the house of the laundress, who was not home. We had to stop again on the way back to drop off dirty sheets and pick up clean ones. Liza went to separate shops for staples (including all drinking water), meat, fish, and fruit. We the drove back to the boat, went to the inn, and carried everything up to the inn.
Heavy rains continued during the evening and night. Fortunately it stopped just before we boarded the inn's open boat to go back to town to drive across the island to catch the ferry back to Banda Aceh.
I can imagine how hard it must have been being there- I remember all the news about the devastation after the tsunami. One a more cheerful note, that shot of the boats moored (sp?) with the mountains behind them is a keeper/framer!
ReplyDeleteGary, I assume you're getting the plans to build one of those cool boats? Kai and Tess will paint it for you once you're done :)
